Emperor, of the fifth generation of the mughal empire, Shahjahan, who was very fond of making tombs besides ruling over India, had a desire in his heart to make a beautiful tomb, in the memory of his wife, Mumtaj.
For this purpose, he asked the king of Jaipur (Amer) where the white marble is found in his kingdom. So the king of Jaipur found the white marble of makrana of good quality and chose the same for making the TajMahal.
Then shahjahan asked the carving of which place was famous. For this, he chose the engravers of Iran and it was Sheeraji, master of carving, to make the architecture of Tajmahal. After the architecture was made master Sheeraji sent 1800 engravers to Makrana, under the leadership of Pahar khan.In around 16th century this work began. For this purpose, 600 elephant were made to carry the stones. And after 22 years of work,Tajmahal was made ready.
After that, the engravers who came from Iran were asked to stay in Makrana, by Shahajahan. Shahajahan
Asked the king of Jaipur to issue orders to let the engravers from Iran to stay in Makrana and earn the livelihood, as the rewards to the engravers. Since then, for about373 years the engravers have been residing in Makrana , and till today they have done the carving of thousand of temples.mosques, gurudwaras , but today, there is no one to acknowledge
The hands of those engravers, who made the beautiful tombs of history. They face many problems now and then. They are not getting any kind of rebate from govt. on the business of Marbles.
And stats govt is getting this money as a royalty. Inspite of this, the govt. of makrana is not bothered. Every now and then ,for some or the other reason the govt is creating the trouble for the mine owners
